SUMMARY:International Childhood Cancer Day (ICCD) 2025 - Policy event
DESCRIPTION:MEP András Kulja (EPP\, Hungary) will host and organize a policy event in anticipation of International Childhood Cancer Day (ICCD) with the participation of SIOP Europe and CCI Europe . \nThe ICCD is commemorated on 15 February each year. The date of the ICCD event at the European Parliament coincides with World Cancer Day (4 February)\, emphasizing the place of childhood cancer at the heart of cancer policies. \nThe meeting will put the spotlight on the current challenges in cross-border care and research in pediatric oncology\, with a focus on advancing multi-stakeholder collaboration to address systemic inequalities. \nJoin this important discussion on Tuesday\, 4 February\, from 16:00 to 18:00 CET\, at the European Parliament in Brussels . The event will be followed by an exclusive networking reception. \n\n\nRegister Here\nThe event will feature two engaging panel discussions: \nCross-Border Access to Care and Training: \nExplore the barriers children face in accessing specialized oncology care under the Cross-Border Healthcare Directive and discuss practical solutions to bridge these gaps. Learn about the role of EU training initiatives and twinning programs in empowering healthcare professionals and building capacity across Member States. \nCross-Border Access to Research: \nUnderstand the regulatory and logistical obstacles to European clinical trials and innovative treatments\, including CAR T-cell therapy. The discussion will highlight how harmonized frameworks can strengthen collaboration\, reduce disparities\, and advance innovation in pediatric oncology research. \nWhy attend?  \nThis is a unique opportunity to engage and network with EU policymakers\, healthcare professionals\, researchers\, and patient advocates and contribute to meaningful dialogue on how EU’s initiatives\, such as the Cross-Border Healthcare Directive and Beating Cancer Plan\, can ensure equitable access to care and research for children with cancer. \nBackground \nDespite all the advancements in the field\, disparities in access to care and research still exist across Europe\, unjustly affecting young patients’ survival and quality of life. Innovative therapies\, such as CAR T-cell therapy\, remain out of reach for many due to logistical and financial barriers. \nThis event will explore how EU policymakers and healthcare professionals can work together to overcome these challenges and build a future where all children with cancer can access the care and research they need\, regardless of where they live. \nFor queries or further information\, please send an email to: andras.kulja@europarl.europa.eu \, danai.spentzou@europarl.europa.eu \,  sonja.ladenstein@siope.eu \, and rachele.vedovelli@siope.eu . \n\nCheck the Provisional Programme Here

SUMMARY:EU4Health Conference 2024
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to be a partner of a very special event this year! \nThe EU4Health Integration and Impact Initiative (EU4H3I) aims to address public health challenges such as health inequalities\, unequal access to treatments and lack of diversity in clinical trials. Together with our partners\, we advocate for interdisciplinary collaboration and the adoption of a holistic\, cross-sectoral approach supported by the One Health perspective to support the development of the European Health Union. \nWe are very pleased to represent the field of childhood cancer alongside key representatives of the One Health approach and brain health in this project. These three areas are closely intertwined and form a complex set of interconnected issues.Childhood cancer not only affects the physical health of young patients during and after treatment\, but also has a profound impact on the cognitive\, emotional\, behavioral and social abilities of affected children and the rest of their lives as well as their families and friends. The One Health approach\, which recognizes the interdependence of human health\, animal health and the environment\, plays a central role in understanding the complexity of this challenge. It recognizes that environmental factors can contribute to the development of childhood cancer\, underlining the need for a comprehensive view. \nThis event will bring together key stakeholders to discuss health inequalities\, access to treatment\, the diversity of clinical trials and urgent needs in the areas of childhood cancer and brain health. The aim is to promote a holistic One Health approach to tackling these challenges. \nWe think it’s important to look at the issue of childhood\, adolescent and young adult cancer not only in isolation but also in relation to other issues\, such as the environment\, in order to better recognize connections and thus be able to advocate even better! \nWhy attend?\n• Network with leading experts and decision-makers from across Europe\n• Learn from distinguished experts\n• Explore innovative solutions to pressing public health challenges\n• As a patient\, advocate for your health and empower yourself with knowledge \nJoin us on December 2\, 2024\, at the Palace of the Academies in Brussels! \nSince the places are limited\, we invite you to secure your participation in this event from now on. Register hereFor more details about the conference\, agenda and speakers\, visit the website.

SUMMARY:Sexuality & Intimacy and Young Cancer Survivors
DESCRIPTION:We all know that cancer can affect all areas of life and simply changes everything. One topic that is just as much a part of this\, but unfortunately is almost never discussed\, is sexuality and intimacy. \nAnd no\, it’s not just cancers of the reproductive organs that change or affect your sex life. The various cancer therapies can have an impact on the intimate and relationship life of those affected and confront couples with major challenges. Everyday life and intimate life are turned upside down by stressful therapies\, but also by their (long term) consequences. This leads to insecurities among those affected with regard to their sexual attractiveness and sexuality. \nSexuality is generally a taboo subject in society and often neglected in cancer treatment. People often find it difficult to address issues of sexual health\, even though it plays an important role in our emotional relationships and well-being. As a result\, sexuality is still a neglected topic in cancer treatment\, and the impact of the disease on sexuality is pushed to the background in favor of therapeutic efficiency. \nSex life can change temporarily or forever! But that doesn’t mean that childhood\, adolescent and young adult cancer survivors can’t have a fulfilling sex life or a good relationship with their own bodies. \nIn our webinar “Sexuality & Intimacy and Young Cancer Survivors” we want to address all these topics without taboos and exchange ideas with Health Care Professionals\, but also within the survivors community and prove ourselves once again: We are never alone with our topics! \nregister here

SUMMARY:Survivor's Week Webinar: Childhood Cancer - Stigma and Communication
DESCRIPTION:Childhood cancer survival rates have been improving globally over recent decades. Researchers in this area highlight\, “Ongoing improvements in survival rates across high-income\, middle-income and low-income countries will result in a rapidly expanding population of survivors with unique health-care needs\, emphasizing the increasing relevance of issues relating to childhood cancer survivors globally.” (Ehrhardt et al. 2023). Young people who have survived cancer are a medically vulnerable population at higher risk for health and psychosocial issues throughout their lifetimes including\, for example\, challenges in mental health\, physical health\, education\, work\, or social integration in their communities. However\, many young people who have survived childhood cancer have meaningful and productive lives with support from family\, community\, and peers. CCI and SIOP offer an annual 2-hour webinar on Childhood Cancer Survivorship to bring together professionals and young people who have been treated for cancer to highlight challenges and successes in this global topic. This year’s theme is Childhood Cancer Stigma and Communication (the language and words we use when speaking about childhood cancer). Join us on June 29\, 2024\, to celebrate cancer survival month (June) and all who have completed treatment worldwide. \nAbout the Speakers: \nYamini Krishnan \nPediatric oncologist\, Head of Paediatric Hematology Oncology and BMT unit at MVR Cancer Centre and Research Institute\, Kerala·MVR Cancer Centre and Research Institute\, Calicut\, Kerala\, India \n\nHead\, Paediatric Haematology Oncology and BMT unit at the MVR Cancer Centre and Research Institute\, Calicut\, Kerala\, India . SUMMARY:Living Beyond Cancer: Late Effects and Survivorship Care Online Course
DESCRIPTION:“Cure is not enough” – in 1975 Giulio J. D’Angio had the vision of childhood and adolescent cancer survivors and their long-term follow-up care. \nWith around 80 % survival of childhood and adolescent cancer\, around 500\,000 survivors live in Europe today and the number is increasing. SUMMARY:Know the basics: ICCD Campaign 2024 - Kick Off!
DESCRIPTION:In this webinar\, CCI Europe will present to the participants the upcoming 3-years global ICCD Campaign “Equal Access To Care” and will focus on how member organisations can actively contribute to year 1 of the campaign with the motto: “Unveiling Challenges”. \nThe Campaign Toolkit will be presented so that member organisations can share and promote the campaign in their countries. In year 1\, everyone affected by childhood cancer is invited to go to the ICCD-platform and submit a digital postcard with the challenges and inequalities they face in their country related to childhood cancer. The postcard will then show up on an interactive\, virtual world map. The objective for year 1 is to raise awareness about the global challenges and inequalities. \nThe aim of this Gold Webinar is to mobilize CCI Europe member organisations for broad and active participation in the campaign. \n\n\nAbout the Speakers: \n\nAnne Goeres\nAnne is managing director at the Fondatioun Kriibskrank Kanner\, national foundation for children with cancer in Luxembourg for 15 years and Committee member of CCI Europe. Anne is a founding board member of Don en Confiance Luxembourg (transparency donations)\, of Ile aux clowns (hospital clowns) and of the National Cancer Institute in Luxembourg representing young cancer patients. Together with two other organisations\, she created Fight Kids Cancer\, an innovative annual call for paediatric cancer research projects. \n\nCarina Schneider\nCarina was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma at the age of 17 and she’s today a passionate patient advocate\, . Experiencing the lack of adequate long-term follow-up care\, she became active in patient advocacy in 2009. In 2017\, she was part of the group of survivor-representatives from across Europe who launched the survivors-network within CCI Europe. Later that year\, she joined the CCI Europe Committee.\nCarina is a psychology graduate and has worked in paediatric oncology since 2013\, first in the Austrian Childhood Cancer Organisation as project manager and later at the Medical University of Vienna as research coordinator in the psychosocial team of the Paediatric Neurooncology Department. SUMMARY:Webinar: The Social Challenges in Follow-Up Care
DESCRIPTION:Cancer in childhood or adolescence affects not only the patient but the whole family. To make this drastic phase in life as bearable as possible\, multidisciplinary cooperation is a precondition. In addition to optimal medical and psychological care\, social support is also a very important pillar during the treatment period. \nPhysical\, psychological and social problems can occur not only during intensive treatment\, but also years later. The number of late effects increases the longer the oncological disease and treatment occurred. These can vary depending on the type of tumor and treatment. Besides the medical late effects\, a wide range of psychosocial problems can also arise and make everyday life even more difficult for patients and their relatives.  Looking at the social dimension\, it has been documented that AYAs have a significant risk of becoming unemployed in adulthood and having to claim social benefits. Similarly\, Survivors have to fight with an increased risk of living a dependent life\, difficulty establishing/maintaining social relationships\, less likely to be married/partnered and in a worse economic situation compared to peers. Many reasons to give this important topic a stage. \nJoin us for an exciting webinar on “Social challenges in Follow-Up care“. Great speakers from different countries will talk about the most important aspects regarding social challenges\, like „The right to be forgotten“ and „Social isolation“.  A social work expert and a Patient Advocate will tell us what benefits families are entitled to and how this is related to the residence permit. \nTherefore\, the webinar is intended for anyone involved with the topic: survivors\, their families and friends\, health care professionals\, and anyone interested. \nregister here

SUMMARY:European Cancer Summit 2023 - Accelerating Momentum: A manifesto to 2030
DESCRIPTION:This Summit is special\, and it’s reflected in the slogan. \n‘Accelerating Momentum’ highlights our impatience. The EU’s Beating Cancer Plan is the opportunity of a lifetime. We’re already implementing a variety of new projects to better care for cancer patients and survivors.  But\, together\, we need to do much more – and much more quickly. The current EU Parliament comes to an end next year. \n‘A manifesto… ‘ refers to a detailed list of cancer care priorities and proposals compiled by the European Cancer Organisation from input received from its member societies and patient groups. The manifesto will be unveiled at the Summit\, and we need to ensure every candidate standing in next year’s European Parliamentary elections subscribes to this roadmap. \n‘…to 2030’… We cannot afford to wait. Cancer doesn’t. We need to set clear deadlines for tangible progress. \nIf ever there was a time and a place to rally the European cancer community – this is it! \nregister here
