In Memoriam: Remembering Julian Cutland

CCI Europe is saddened to share the news of the passing of Julian Cutland, a former Board member of the International Confederation of Childhood Cancer Parent Organisations (ICCCPO), now Childhood Cancer International (CCI), who passed away on 22 August 2026.

Julian became involved in the childhood cancer community following his daughter Hillary’s diagnosis with aplastic anaemia in 1977. Together with his wife, Sadie, he recognised the need for greater support for families facing childhood cancer. In 1979, they helped establish CHOC in South Africa, which grew from a parents’ support group into a national organisation supporting children and families affected by childhood cancer and life-threatening blood disorders. Julian later served on the ICCCPO Board for seven years, including as Treasurer and Webmaster. In 2008, he compiled and edited Your Group Is Not Alone, a handbook bringing together the experiences of parent organisations worldwide to support groups establishing childhood cancer organisations, particularly in developing countries.

Through his work, Julian made a lasting contribution to strengthening support for children and families affected by childhood cancer and to connecting parent organisations internationally. CCI Europe extends its condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.
